What DISEC debates
DISEC is the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, the Disarmament and International Security Committee. It handles the questions of global peace and security that touch every member state at once: the control and reduction of weapons, the risks posed by nuclear, chemical and biological arms, and the norms that are meant to keep conflict from spilling across borders. Because these issues affect the whole membership, DISEC works with the full General Assembly rather than a small council, which makes it a natural home for broad, principle-first debate.
In a Model UN conference, DISEC delegates draft and negotiate resolutions on topics such as arms trade regulation, the prevention of an arms race in outer space, cyber security threats, landmines and small arms, and confidence-building measures between rival states. The committee rewards delegates who can balance national security interests against the shared goal of a safer world, and who can find language that many countries will actually sign. It is often the committee where new delegates first learn how disarmament diplomacy really works.
Spades in the deck
In Model UN Poker, DISEC is the spades suit. Its cards carry the imagery of the assembly floor and the machinery of security diplomacy: gavels coming down to open debate, podiums where delegates take the floor, official seals, and the columns and benches of a parliament in session. The bold black of spades gives the committee a formal, high-stakes look that fits its subject.
- ♠ Gavels
- ♠ Podiums
- ♠ Seals
- ♠ Parliament
The suit is thematic. Spades give DISEC its look, but they carry no special power in play. Suit matters in only two ways: it breaks ties (spades beat hearts beat diamonds beat clubs, so a spade is the strongest tiebreaker), and collecting five cards of one suit scores a "Committee Flush."
Scoring rewards things like the best poker hand, collecting a Committee Flush, collecting "lion" cards, and a special-envoy bonus. The full rules, with all the details, arrive at launch.
